Going for Gold
Australia’s 2024 Olympic athletes have become the most successful contingent of all time, with the greatest number of gold medals ever won at a Games.
At the time of writing, Australia is sitting third on the medal tally — five golds clear of fourth-placed France, and sitting behind the United States and China, with our total so far standing at 18 gold medals, 12 silver and 11 bronze.
By comparison, Australia’s previous best-ever hauls were Athens in 2004 and Tokyo in 2021, where our athletes came home with 17 gold medals on both occasions.
And with a few more days of competition still to come, there are further chances to add to our medal tally.
While the European time zone hasn’t been ideal for an Australian audience, it hasn’t stopped local supporters from gathering and cheering on our athletes.
One of the more popular places to congregate and watch the Australian team competing in Paris has been at Bankstown Sports. In fact, the Club is the only officially accredited Australian Olympic Committee live site in southwest Sydney, screening 24/7 coverage.
“As the home of sport in Sydney’s southwest, guests have been indulging in our delectable French-inspired snacks like crepes and fondue fries and taking in all the Olympics action at our comfortable viewing areas across the Club, including Rainforest Lounge, Basement Brewhouse and the East Terrace,” said Bankstown Sports CEO Michael Clancy.
“At Bankstown Sports Club, we are dedicated to being the one-stop destination for a fun-filled Olympics experience, bringing our community together to share the joys of sport.”
Bankstown Sports amplified the experience on Friday, 2 August when it participated in the Australian Olympic Committee’s Green & Gold Day, where Australians across the country were encouraged to wear the national colours in support of athletes competing in Paris.
“We were so excited to paint the Club in our national colours last Friday for Green and Gold Day,” said Michael.
“Hosted by sports presenter Kat Haddad, the community heard from former Olympians and Paralympians and were able to take part in free activities such as face painting, balloon twisting, mini-Olympics and giveaways. “
The panel discussion consisted of former Kookaburras player Simon Orchard, former Australian swim team head coach Alan Thompson and dual Paralympian Rae Anderson.
And while many will be disappointed that the Olympics will be drawing to a close in just a few days, there’s plenty more fun to come at Bankstown Sports, with the Club to also be a dedicated live site for the Paralympics, which begins on 28 August.
