The NSW Government is undertaking a review of the vocational education and training (VET) system to improve apprenticeship and trainee completion rates across the state. ClubsNSW has advocated for opportunities to better support VET students in the hospitality sector to attract new talent into clubs.
Clubs, like the entire hospitality industry, are experiencing ongoing shortages of skilled workers, particularly in food trade positions.
Many clubs are interested in supporting the development of a trainee, particularly an emerging chef or cook, to address these persistent skills shortages. However, finding a food trade apprentice is a challenging task. This can be partially attributed to wages, unappealing work conditions, or minimal interest in pursuing a trade.
Recently, the NSW Government announced a comprehensive examination of the vocational education and training sector. An essential aspect of the review involves tackling the current and future skills needs of NSW.
The NSW VET Review discussion paper discusses four key issues:
- Boosting student success
- Placing TAFE NSW at the heart of the system
- Delivering VET in NSW
- Preparing VET for the future.
In its submission , ClubsNSW highlighted the importance of enhancing skills development and training while also addressing the present shortage of skilled workers across the state and anticipating future workforce demands.
ClubsNSW made the following recommendations:
- Promote apprenticeships as a viable career pathway to success
- Provide more opportunities for industry to work with government, including providing feedback on practical skills in training courses
- Enhance training flexibility for apprentices by introducing intensive off-the-job training, expanding course locations, and making shorter courses available
- Provide additional support for apprentices in industries experiencing skills shortages and for courses with high non-completion rates, such as food trade apprentices
- Increase VET participation and facilitate placements within the local community.
- It is important the shortage of food trade apprentices is addressed, so local communities can continue to enjoy delicious meals at their local club.
Clubs can keep informed on the progress of the NSW VET Review here.
We are grateful for the feedback provided by several clubs, including Bankstown Sports, Club Central and Yamba Bowling Club, about their experiences employing (or seeking to employ) apprentices.
ClubsNSW will continue to work with the NSW Government and Federal Government to ensure the VET system supports food trade apprentices in the hospitality sector.
