Important Update: Changes to ATM Rules in Clubs
Since 1 January 2025, cash dispensing machines in clubs have been subjected to new distance and sight requirements.
These changes, which fall under the Gaming Machines Regulation 2019, focus on how far ATMs need to be from gaming areas and whether they’re visible from those areas.
Since the new rules came in, Liquor & Gaming NSW (L&GNSW) has checked over 200 venues and found an 87 per cent compliance rate. Some venues thought they had followed the rules but still needed to make some changes.
Common issues included:
- Measuring incorrectly — some venues measured a walking distance instead of a five-metre radius from gaming entrances.
- Not fully blocking the view — some partitions weren’t tall or wide enough, or had gaps where the ATM could be seen.
- ATMs not been moved yet — ATM providers have been engaged but venues have not scheduled a service for the relocation.
From 1 February 2025, L&GNSW will be enforcing the new rules strictly.
If your venue is still operating cash dispensing machines that do not comply with new regulatory requirements you may face penalties, including fines, statutory directions and/or prosecution[AT1] .
