How to Support Older Patrons in Your Club
- Policy
Clubs offer a safe and inclusive environment for older Australians to enjoy a beverage or meal; engage in activities such as bingo, bowls, or exercise classes; and to connect with fellow community members. These experiences are key to reducing social isolation and supporting our elderly loved ones to remain active and healthy.
For many clubs, a significant portion of their membership is comprised of senior citizens. NSW Health has developed a suite of resources to support venues in promoting healthy ageing within their local communities.
The Get Healthy Service (GHS)
GHS is a complimentary phone and online NSW Health coaching service that supports NSW residents in making healthy lifestyle changes.
This evidence-based service helps older Aussies continue to achieve positive health outcomes through goal setting.
Member clubs are encouraged to promote this service to their elderly patrons, particularly during activities that they already participate in.
Further details can be found here or by calling 1300 806 258.
Healthy Ageing Online Learning
Healthy Ageing Online Learning is a package of education modules and home-based exercises.
Seniors can access:
- Eight online learning modules with quizzes.
- Two online exercise programs designed for beginners with videos.
- Fact sheets with helpful tips and information.
- An exercise manual and logbook with images and easy-to-follow instructions.
Clubs may consider showing these modules on a big screen or incorporating exercise/movement breaks during an otherwise stationary activity, such as bingo or trivia.
A delivery guide developed by NSW Health can be found here.
Online Exercise Directory
The Online Exercise Directory supports individuals over the age of 50 in finding physical activity and healthy lifestyle options in their local area. The platform supports older Aussies to participate in tai chi, dance, fitness and exercise classes, as well as strength and balance sessions.
Clubs can contact providers if interested in hosting a program at their venue or alternatively guide seniors to access this service directly.
Stepping On
Stepping On is a seven-week fall prevention program designed for adults 65 years of age and older and for Aboriginal adults 45 years of age and older.
This initiative, offered by several Local Health Districts across NSW, teaches seniors how to reduce their risk of falling and maintain independence.
Please visit the Stepping On website for additional details.
A brochure with details on NSW Health’s healthy ageing resources can be found here. Clubs are welcome to provide older patrons with a printed copy.
