Nestled in the heart of Lightning Ridge in the New England Tablelands, Lightning Ridge Bowling Club has been lighting up Christmas for those in need since 2016.
In the small town known for its opal mines and unique outback charm resides an abundance of Christmas cheer in the form of the Orphan’s Christmas Lunch, held by the Bowling Club every year. The event aims to bring together individuals from all walks of life who may find themselves alone or in need of company during the festive season. From those battling loneliness to those enduring the scorching summer heat in makeshift living arrangements, everyone is welcomed with open arms to partake in a family-style feast, free of charge.
This initiative has grown exponentially over the years, reflecting the overwhelming support and generosity of the beloved Lightning Ridge Bowlo.
What originally began with 75 guests in its first year has blossomed into a gathering of over 200 attendees, supported by a dedicated team of 50 volunteers who selflessly contribute their time and effort to ensure the event's success each year. In addition to the Club’s event, 400 containers of food are delivered via helicopter to those in surrounding areas.
Beyond providing a warm meal and companionship on Christmas Day, the Orphan's Christmas Lunch has become a symbol of unity and solidarity within Lightning Ridge. New friendships have been forged, and the spirit of giving permeates throughout the year, with the club now channelling its surplus funds to support other community ventures.
The positive impact of the Lightning Ridge Bowling Club's initiative reminds us of the power of collective action in promoting mental wellbeing and fostering a sense of belonging.
