‘No Dog Left Behind’ — Looking Back at Cronulla RSL’s C&C Win
Last year, Cronulla RSL in Sydney’s south took out the Heart of the Community Award at the Clubs & Community Awards Night for their contribution to honouring four-legged veterans.
The Club established the ‘No Dog Left Behind’ initiative after CEO Sue McNeill was approached by a local defence animal handler and Club member regarding retired war dog Manic who was looking for a place to commemorate ANZAC Day. She promptly granted Manic entry and even bestowed the four-legged veteran with an honorary membership.
The encounter with Manic unveiled an overlooked reality — that the Australian Defence Force does not have a duty of care to military working animal veterans when their service ends. All responsibilities and costs are placed upon the family who take in the retired animal, including hefty veterinary bills, medication, food and shelter.
The initiative was launched in conjunction with Australian War Animal Memorial Association (AWAMO) which not only supports animals like Manic but also sheds light on the significant contributions animals have made during times of war and peace. The Club established a fundraiser to support AWAMO’s ANZAC Veteran Service Dog Assistance Project, raising $15,000 and a significant sum held in a trust for Manic’s ongoing care.
In recognition of its outstanding contributions, Cronulla RSL was honoured with a life membership award by AWAMO and acclaimed as the first RSL club in NSW to establish an AWAMO-supported memorial plaque for war animals. Moreover, Cronulla RSL has spearheaded efforts to support innocent animals affected by conflicts abroad, notably in Ukraine, through its subsidiary, Australian Animal Aid.
Cronulla RSL maintains its commitment to advocating for veteran animals as they continue to inspire change in policy and foster awareness of the invaluable contributions of our animal companions in times of need.
We know there a lot of clubs like Cronulla RSL who show similar compassion and determination to support the wellbeing of community members, including our furry friends.
