Keep the Learning Coming
Adjunct Professor Lisa Ronson delivers her keynote at the 2023 ClubsNSW Conference & AGM.
Day Two of the 2023 ClubsNSW Conference & AGM was a truly pivotal event, addressing key issues that affect clubs and their role in the community.
The first keynote speaker, Adjunct Professor Lisa Ronson, highlighted how clubs interact with every consumer and emphasised their vital role in the community. Moreover, practical applications for improving club websites were explored, underscoring the importance of a strong online presence in the digital age.
The Political Landscape Forum, hosted by ClubsNSW Policy & Government Executive Manager Simon Sawday, was another significant event on the agenda. Delegates had the opportunity to hear from political leaders — Geoff Provest MP and Kirby Anderson — about the future of the industry, gaining valuable insights into potential regulatory changes and challenges ahead.
In the second panel, Focus on the Future led by John Tully, financial realities took centre stage, with a focus on evaluating and then reevaluating before signing important contracts. The panel emphasised the importance of prudent financial planning and risk management for clubs as they look to invest in their infrastructure.
Diversification was a key strategy discussed on Day Two. Clubs were encouraged to ensure their offerings match the demographics of their communities — clubs could consider operating pharmacies, medical centres, and even heart surgeons to better serve their members.
The challenges of profitability in the food sector were also addressed, with a careful examination of the balance between privatisation and outsourcing — valuable guidance on how clubs can make the most out of their food and beverage services.
Cashless Gaming, facilitated by ClubsNSW CEO Rebecca Riant, was a particularly engaging panel, demystifying digital wallets, cashless gaming, cashless cards, and cash and pay. Staying current with technological advancements while maintaining responsible gaming practices couldn’t be more important for clubs.
In the Made Possible panel hosted by ClubGRANTS & Community Officer Ofa Latu, the invaluable support that community and sporting groups receive from clubs was covered. Organisations like Disaster Relief Australia and Learning Links highlighted their story and how clubs contribute to their and the broader community's wellbeing.
Arj Puveendran, Partner at Thomson Geer, provided a brief update on the NSW Court of Appeal overturning a recent NSW Supreme Court decision relating to the powers of the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority (ILGA). And Luke Patchett OAM from Orange Sky Laundry shared his insights in the second keynote address on what it was like to create a non-profit model from scratch, offering practical guidance for clubs interested in initiating positive change in their communities.
And the day wound up with the Havana Nights-themed Conference Dinner. Delegates and their partners were wowed by Havana Dancers, an Elton John show and the iconic rock band Dragon. The dinner provided a chance to network but also to have some fun after a day of serious learning.
