Last weekend, Nambucca Heads Bowling Club on the Mid North Coast of NSW held a ‘walk-a-thon’ to raise money for ShoreTrack — a not-for-profit which looks after the wellbeing of disadvantaged, disengaged, high-risk and vulnerable young people experiencing challenges such as inter-generational unemployment, unsafe home environments, substance abuse and contact with the juvenile justice system.
Key Points
- Nambucca Heads Bowling Club raises $1400 for ShoreTrack
- Maze built outside Club for members and guests to walk laps and raise funds
“ShoreTrack is an amazing cause. They help all at risk by putting them through pathways doing everything from metal work to beauty school,” said Nambucca Heads Bowling Club Bar Manager Jayden Clements.
“They're just absolutely amazing, so anywhere that we can help out those guys, we love to.”
The walk-a-thon comprised of a man-made 500-metre-long maze through the grass outside the Club. Members and guests paid a $10 entry fee to do laps of the maze, with all proceeds going to ShoreTrack. The Club also had market stalls set up (also with a $10 entry fee) and the local Lions Club cooking a sausage sizzle, which Jayden said was so popular that volunteers had to run off to get extra snags during the event.
More than 100 people from the small town attended, successfully raising over $1400 for the cause through proceeds from the maze entry, market entry and raffle ticket sales.
“Everybody loved it!” Jayden said, adding that one local was so keen he did 59 laps of the maze.
“Be on the lookout for more events. I love doing stuff like this, I love helping out the community. It's a Club that's for the community, so the more stuff like this the better.”
