Supporting Clubs Today and Advocating for Sustainable Worker’s Compensation
Created by the hospitality industry for only the hospitality industry, HII was established to give clubs a genuine choice in workers compensation insurance.
Key Points
- HII was established over 17 years ago to give the hospitality industry an option outside of icare for workers compensation — something only six industries in NSW are eligible for.
- HII provides free expert WHS services to help clubs prevent injuries and create safer workplaces.
- The NSW workers compensation system is under financial pressure, and reform is essential to ensure its long-term sustainability and restore fairness in what is an employer-funded liability scheme.
- Clubs are encouraged to contact ClubsNSW or HII for support and to take part in advocating for legislative changes that support both clubs and their workers.
From the outset, we have consistently outperformed icare across all key measures, reflecting our deep understanding of the sector we serve. But our role goes beyond insurance: we work alongside clubs to promote safer workplaces, support legislative reforms that assist injured workers, and ensure the workers compensation system helps people return to work safely and efficiently. We are delighted with the results we’ve achieved in key worker’s compensation metrics including cost of claims, return-to-work rates, and customer service.
Based on 10 years of regulatory data, icare’s cost of claims for hospitality venues has been 107 per cent higher than HII’s. This translates to significantly lower premiums for our policyholders, freeing up valuable resources for clubs to reinvest in their people, venues, and communities.
The impact of rising claims costs is also reflected in industry rates for clubs. Over the past three years, icare’s rate has risen by 35 per cent, while HII’s rate has increased by just five per cent, delivering real savings for our clients.
"Helping people get their lives back" is at the heart of everything we do at HII. One of the key measures of success is how quickly we help injured workers return to meaningful employment. From day one, HII has set the benchmark for return-to-work performance, a standard that other insurers, including icare, continue to strive for.
The latest data from the State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA) shows that we return more people to their pre-injury working levels within four weeks than icare does in thirteen. This is a powerful demonstration of our commitment to supporting both workers and employers throughout the recovery journey.
At HII, we pride ourselves on delivering exceptional customer service and helping our clients and their employees navigate what can be a very confronting and unfamiliar time. For many injured workers, this may be their only experience of a workplace injury, so supporting them through the process is crucial to achieving a safe and positive return to work. We’re also here for you keeping you informed on industry trends and changes in the workers compensation landscape, so you can focus on running your club with confidence.
Sometimes clichés endure because they remain true — and in injury prevention, “prevention is better than cure” certainly applies. At HII, our Work Health and Safety team is dedicated to helping clubs prevent injuries before they occur. From slips, trips and falls to raising awareness of psychosocial hazards, our team is here to support you. Best of all, these services are provided free of charge for all our clients.
We offer a broad range of WHS initiatives, including wearable technology assessments of manual handling tasks, comprehensive venue inspections, online training courses to help improve your workplace safety and compliance, and Risk Master, a tailored WHS management system delivered in partnership with Master Apps.
Our proactive approach continues to deliver measurable benefits to clubs, as reflected in the 40 per cent reduction in physical claims since 2013.
