Laurieton United Services Club Leads the Way in Environmental Stewardship
Laurieton United Services Club (LUSC) has firmly established itself as a champion of sustainability, earning praise for its forward-thinking environmental initiatives and commitment to community well-being.
In a time when eco-conscious practices are more crucial than ever, LUSC is setting the standard for how clubs can successfully integrate sustainability into their core operations.
In the 2024/25 Strive 4 Sustainability (S4S) Scorecard assessment, LUSC achieved an impressive 89 per cent, a substantial leap from the previous year’s 60 per cent.
The S4S Scorecard, developed by Ecotourism Australia, evaluates organisations across four key pillars: environmental impact, socio-economic impact, cultural impact and sustainable management.
This remarkable improvement is a testament to the Club’s proactive strategies and steadfast dedication to positive environmental change.
“Our commitment to sustainability goes beyond our operations — it’s about setting a positive example for the community and encouraging meaningful change, both locally and beyond,” says the Club’s General Manager, Matt Haack.
How They’re Doing it
LUSC’s strong performance is backed by a series of innovative and practical initiatives that address multiple areas of sustainability:
- Water Conservation: The addition of water tanks at both Laurieton United Services Club and Kew Country Club has significantly reduced reliance on municipal water supplies, supporting long-term water sustainability.
- Green Waste Management: The integration of green waste systems has helped minimise landfill contributions while promoting recycling and composting, turning waste into a resource.
- Cultural Awareness: By promoting cultural inclusivity and fostering awareness, LUSC continues to cultivate a space that values and celebrates diversity.
- Solar Power Upgrades: The Club has upgraded its solar infrastructure, reducing its carbon footprint and increasing energy efficiency through clean, renewable power sources.
Inspiring the Community to Join the Movement
LUSC’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond its own operations. Through initiatives like The Deck Café’s offer of discounts to customers who bring reusable cups, the Club is actively encouraging patrons to embrace environmentally responsible habits.
This approach not only reduces waste but also fosters a culture of shared responsibility.
"This fantastic result is a true reflection of the Club’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and the collective effort that’s gone into creating meaningful change,” Matt says.
“While I wasn’t part of the team at the time, I’m genuinely excited to build on this success and continue exploring new ways we can grow, improve and make a lasting positive impact.”
