New GambleAware Resources for Veterans and Their Families
GambleAware’s new and targeted range of resources supports veterans and their families.
The resources offer practical information, tips on how to spot the signs of gambling harm and ways to get support when it’s needed, all available for download on the GambleAware website.
Research indicates that veterans, people who serve or have served in the Australian Defence Force, are almost twice as likely to experience gambling harm compared to the general population. The risk is even higher for veterans who are young, male, unemployed, from junior ranks or medically discharged.
Earlier this month, Minister David Harris launched an updated NSW Veterans Strategy and Action Plan 2025–2030 to support veterans and their families. The strategy developed an interactive report to analyse the 2021 Census data that revealed nearly 130,000 veterans live in NSW.
The development of these resources aligns with the updated strategy, which aims to support the diverse needs of veterans in NSW through a collaborative, whole-of-government and whole-of-community approach.
This strategy includes key initiatives such as employment programs, mental health support, and resources for legal aid and housing assistance.
The GambleAware resources include:
- Brochure:
- Are you a veteran worried about the impact of your gambling?
- Factsheets:
- Understanding gambling harm among veterans.
- Are you a veteran who wants to manage your gambling?
- Posters:
- What's gambling really costing you?
- Help is available for you and your loved ones.
GambleAware partnered with RSL NSW, Office for Veterans Affairs, RSL LifeCare, Open Arms and Bravery Trust in developing these resources.
Clubs can use GambleAware’s targeted resources to support the broader strategy addressing the higher risk of gambling harm among veterans, providing such patrons with the necessary support and information to manage and mitigate these risks effectively.
