Nelson Bay Golf Club Program Increasing Female Patronage
Located in the picturesque Port Stephens region, the Nelson Bay Golf Club is not only renowned for its breathtaking views and pristine golf course, but also for its commitment to community engagement.
One of its standout initiatives is the Bay Buddies Program — a unique endeavour designed to help introduce new players to the sport. The innovative mentorship scheme pairs experienced golfers with newfound lady enthusiasts.
At its core, the Bay Buddies Program seeks to break down the barriers that sometimes makes the sport feel exclusive. By pairing club members with individuals of varying skill levels, the initiative has increased female patronage significantly.
Members act as mentors, sharing tips on gameplay, etiquette and the nuances of the course, while fostering friendships that extend beyond just golf.
"Bay Buddies is more than just a golf program – it’s a community,” says Nelson Bay Golf Club General Manager David Lulham.
“We’ve seen firsthand how it has given so many women the confidence to take up the game and build lasting friendships along the way.
"This initiative has been instrumental in making golf more inclusive and accessible for women of all ages at our Club, particularly those who may have never considered picking up a club before."
The local community has responded, too. David says the number of patrons taking up the program has been vast.
"The success of Bay Buddies speaks for itself – with over 80 participants and a 70 per cent retention rate,” says David.
“It's clear this program is making a real difference in our Club and our community."
To truly see the impact of the program, Nelson Bay Golf Club used a survey to obtain feedback. The findings were incredible, with one guest saying: “I wanted to learn how to play golf in a fun, professional environment. The fact that it was for females only was very inviting.”
Many respondents shared that they had felt nervous when starting but quickly found the program to be inclusive and encouraging. Some credited Bay Buddies with giving them the confidence to continue with golf and even transition into playing competitions.
Players also mentioned they now play regularly with the friends they made through the program, with some even organising trips together.
The program, in collaboration with Nelson Bay Golf Club's coaching clinics, runs Wednesdays and Saturdays from 2.30pm during school terms.
