Ballina RSL Saving the Planet One Coffee at a Time
Ballina RSL is looking to do their bit for the environment by switching to reusable coffee cups, and is encouraging others to get involved.
This change aims to not only reduce waste at the Club, but also inspire other local businesses and residents to join the movement towards a one-use coffee cup-free Ballina.
The Club has partnered with Huskee, which manufactures cups made from repurposed coffee husks, and are an eco-friendly alternative to traditional disposable cups.
Not only do they reduce reliance on single-use plastics, but they are also designed for durability, making them perfect for the everyday coffee drinker.
Each cup features an innovative design that keeps drinks hot while remaining cool to touch, an ideal combination for those rushing in for their morning caffeine fix and don’t have the time to sit down with a mug or glass.
Ballina RSL's transition to the reusable cups has been met with enthusiasm from both staff and customers, with team member Sarah Rozairo driving the campaign.
“So from the 1st of March, the Club has completely gotten rid of all of our single-use coffee cups,” Sarah told local radio station Paradise FM.
“Coffee cups, as you know, are not always recyclable, and we go through a lot of them here in Australia, 1.8 billion a year, which is 2.7 million disposable coffee cups a week, which is incredible.
“We are very mindful that we don't want to contribute to that and we do go through a significant amount with two cafes, a big bistro, events and functions. A lot of our coffee cups weren't actually leaving the Club and it just seemed really pointless and wasteful.”
Ballina RSL has already taken delivery of hundreds of Huskee cups and has removed all single-use cups from the venue.
In a bid to encourage customers to get behind the switch, the Club is running a campaign to motivate their coffee drinkers.
“It's completely washable,” Sarah says of the Huskee cup. “It keeps it nice and hot and you're not going to spill it. And we've got the option for you to return the Husky Cup and get a 30 cent discount because you're amazing and you save the planet by just having one cup of coffee.
“If you come in and buy a $5 cup of coffee, we will give you a complimentary Huskee cup to get you started.
“It's the way of the future and I know that it's probably daunting for a few people going ‘oh I forgot my cup’ but that's okay we'll give you another one.
“We've got hundreds of them already.”
