Bowling Clubs Team Up with Skin Check Charity in Cancer Fight
With Australia’s warm climate it’s no surprise that we like to spend much of our time outdoors — whether it’s at the beach, the park, the local bowling and golf clubs, and the list goes on.
Unfortunately, our love of outdoors also comes at a cost, with Australia having one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world.
Around two out of three Australians will be diagnosed with some form of skin cancer during their lifetime, according to Cancer Council NSW.
Bowls NSW has taken a proactive approach to the issue by announcing a new partnership with Skin Check Champions, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to raising awareness and improving access to life-saving skin cancer detection services, particularly for communities most at risk of skin cancer.
Bowls NSW CEO Tim Rowe and President Dilys Kindleysides, together with Skin Check Champions Founder and CEO Scott John Maggs and health technologist Dan Hamilton gathered at Clovelly Bowling Club last week to officially launch the partnership.
They were joined by Clovelly Bowling Club President Steve Sampson, Clovelly Bowling Club member John Barrett, Northmead Bowling Club member Jan Gale and Chris O’Brien Lifehouse volunteer Judi Staple who shared their stories of how skin cancer has impacted their lives and the importance of getting checked.
Through this partnership, Skin Check Champions will bring their innovative ‘Silver Bullet’ mobile clinic to Cherry Street Bowling Club in Ballina during the 2025 Bowls NSW State Championships, which takes place from 25 March to 9 April.
The state-of-the-art clinic, powered by world-class technology and expertise, will offer free skin checks to all attendees including bowlers, friends and family alike.
Skin Check Champions will also make a stop at Clovelly Bowling Club on their way to Ballina, providing another opportunity for free skin checks to members and the wider community.
Together, Bowls NSW and Skin Check Champions aims to champion awareness, early detection and proactive care in the fight against skin cancer.
