Club Hillsdale Helping Tackle Domestic Violence
Club Hillsdale is a little hidden gem, nestled amongst Sydney’s eastern suburbs — but it has a big impact on the local community.
The Club recently unveiled its latest renovations, with members and guests now able to enjoy access to a state-of-the-art synthetic bowling green, an upgraded grass green, a modernised gaming room (which was completely re-located) and improved facilities. The Club also boasts new carpet and freshly painted walls.
These enhancements have led to a notable rise in membership, especially among women who value the Club's friendly and secure atmosphere.
But it is the Club’s dedication to helping out local women and families experiencing domestic violence that has really made a difference in the community.
General Manager Carlos Becerra, alongside President Cyril McNichols and the Club’s Board of Directors, have helped form a collaboration with the Bayside Women’s Shelter — an essential organisation that offers vital support to women and families impacted by domestic violence. And on Friday, 28 February Hillsdale Bowling Club will partner with Bayside Women’s Shelter for their second annual Sports Lunch.
The event — which has already booked out — aims to generate crucial funds to aid the important work that the Bayside Women’s Shelter does within the community. It will include a two-course meal, a performance from a magician, appearances from former and current NRL players, a special raffle and more.
Carlos said it is a cause that has become close to the Club’s heart.
“The Club donated $2000 six months ago and then another $2000 recently to keep the shelter going because we had one of our staff here going through these problems,” Carlos says.
“I learnt more about the Bayside Women’s Shelter and how there is a lot of people in the same situation. We’re hoping they can eventually build another house. We will support them in any way that we can.
“We are hoping to raise about $16,000. It could be less, but we have 150 people coming.”
The ability to help organisations such as the Bayside Women’s Shelter is becoming easier with the Club’s increasing in patronage.
“We have increased our bowling membership from 32 to 56 over the past 16 months,” Carlos says.
“We currently have around 40 newcomers actively participating in our Jack Attack Program, which begins on Thursday, 20 February."
Beyond bowling, Hillsdale Bowling Club has evolved into a lively local centre, welcoming individuals of all ages and backgrounds and doing what clubs do best — supporting the community.
