Terrigal Bowling Club’s Future Assured After Lease Extension
In a big win for Terrigal Bowling Club, Central Coast Council has awarded a 10-year lease extension, ensuring the cherished venue’s long-term future.
This decision represents a significant milestone for the Club, which has played a vital role in Terrigal's social fabric for more than 70 years.
Less than three years ago it was an entirely different situation, with Central Coast Council investigating a reclassification of the land, with an intent to sell it.
The 2021 proposal faced strong opposition from both the Club and the community, prompting the creation of a change.org petition which successfully led to a reversal of the decision within 24 hours.
Club CEO Craig Fairweather says the certainty enables the Club to begin work on rejuvenation plans.
"We are profoundly grateful to the Central Coast Council for granting us this 10-year lease extension,” he says.
“This decision not only secures our future but also ends a period of great uncertainty for our members.
“For years, our bowlers have faced the stress of short-term lease renewals, which cast doubt on the stability of our beloved Club.
“Thanks to the Council's support, we can now focus on growing and enhancing our community offerings without the looming worry of what next year might hold.
“To celebrate the lease extension, we are currently looking at installing a children’s play area which will be a first in Terrigal for our young families to come and enjoy.”
The lease news has been welcomed by members, who had long suspected they may lose the site.
“If this Club ever closed, it would be like losing a family,” says bowler Robynne Small.
“We’ve all become the closest of friends through bowls, but it’s so much more than that.
“It’s the social connection, the support system - especially for some of our members who are over 90.
“Clubs like this are vital for both mental health and physical wellness."
To celebrate, the Club has invited the local community community to join in the festivities and looks forward to the next decade of memories and milestones.
