As we approach the upcoming long weekend, it is a friendly reminder to all member clubs that the clock will be moving forward by one hour as daylight saving begins.
On Sunday, 6 October 2024, at 2am the clocks move forward to 3am.
How to pay an employee?
For employees who work during this time, they are still paid for their full shift even though the clock moves forward one hour.
For example, if an employee’s usual shift over the weekend is 8.30pm on Saturday until 5am on Sunday, the employee has worked for eight hours and has a 30-minute unpaid break.
During this shift, daylight saving starts, and the clock will move forward by one hour. The employee would have worked 7 hours but is still paid for eight hours.
What happens when daylight saving ends?
When daylight saving ends next year in April, the clock goes back by one hour. So, for employees who work overnight, they will work an additional hour but are not paid for this hour.
For example, if an employee is working their usual shift that night, they will work for nine hours, which is one hour more than usual, but they will only be paid for eight hours.
