Recent Cheque Fraud Incidents in Sydney
Written by Chanel Beynon, ClubsNSW Policy and Industry Advisor

Clubs should be aware about recent cases of cheque fraud involving gaming machine prizes at venues in Sydney.
Here’s how the scam typically unfolds:
A person wins a cheque and deposits it digitally using their banking app, which means they don’t need to present the physical cheque.
- They then slightly damage the physical cheque, which they still have on hand.
- The individual returns to the venue with the damaged cheque, claiming the bank won’t accept it, and asks for a replacement.
- The venue takes the old cheque and issues a new one.
- Before the original cheque is cancelled, the person deposits the new one.
Venues should hold off on reissuing gaming cheques until they’ve confirmed that the original cheque has been cancelled by the bank.
If you believe you have been caught up in this fraudulent activity, please report it to the NSW Police.
