A new report, Community Compass: A segmentation of Australia’s views and engagement with the community sector (report) was released on 17 July 2024. The report is available here.
The report examined attitudes (including challenges) toward the community sector, and highlights the perspectives of 3071 Australian community members, aged 17 and above, on the community sector, which encompasses suburban sports clubs, mid-sized not-for-profits and large charities.
Six population groups were identified, each with varying levels of engagement and attitudes towards the community sector.
The report offers insights relevant to clubs, including those offering sports and recreation facilities, as they are integral parts of the community sector.
The findings suggest that while there is a general sense of adequate support for amateur sports and the arts, there are concerns about the level of support for the elderly and disabled individuals, and those facing mental health challenges.
Key findings of the report include:
- There is broad support for community organisations, with most Australians believing they make the world ‘a better place’ and effectively address overlooked problems.
- Australians are engaging with the community sector in a variety of ways and many are open to getting more involved. However, many Australians face barriers to contributing (including volunteering), particularly a lack of time and energy. Others are not aware of local organisations or lack the confidence to get involved.
- There is general disengagement and pessimism about the direction society is heading in shaping attitudes and the level of engagement with the community sector.
- A split opinion on whether community organisations should engage in political advocacy or focus solely on service delivery.
- Recognition of the importance of community organisations in tackling societal challenges and the need for increased government funding.
