How to Protect Your Community This Winter

As winter approaches, the mornings and nights are becoming much cooler and the local community’s vulnerability to illnesses, such as influenza, is increasing. As social community hubs, clubs should be aware that there is a higher risk of patrons transmitting the ‘flu’ in their venues.
Venues can play a role in protecting themselves and their local communities during the winter months. To support their efforts, NSW Health has prepared a communication toolkit for influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and COVID-19.
In particular, NSW Health is asking clubs to remind patrons about the flu vaccine, which protects them from getting extremely sick.
The flu vaccine is free for the following groups:
- Children aged 6 months to under 5 years.
- Pregnant women, at any stage of pregnancy.
- Aboriginal people aged 6 months and over.
- Anyone aged 65+.
- People with serious health conditions, including heart disease, chronic lung conditions (including severe asthma), kidney, liver disease and diabetes.
How can clubs help?
There are numerous ways clubs can assist their local communities and we’ve outlined some suggestions below. This list is not exhaustive and clubs can be creative in how they convey the message.
- Use the resources provided by NSW Health to share the messaging to members, guests and visitors. Consider printing brochures for patrons, placing fact sheets on walls or using the social tiles for publication on the club’s social media channels.
- Reminding regular patrons, especially those in vulnerable cohorts (ie seniors) attending clubs about the flu vaccination.
- Reminding staff, especially front of house employees, about the importance of getting the flu vaccine.
Further information can be found here.
We thank clubs for their efforts in protecting their communities this winter.
