Though your club will undoubtedly already have oil collection processes in place, making the switch to the VUCOR scheme is straightforward.
Mary’s, the self-proclaimed ‘Big Bad Burger Bar’ with five locations around Sydney, was the very first to sign-up to VUCOR. Jake Smyth, founding partner and co-owner, says that Mary’s is honoured to take on this simple and effective way of supporting the local community.
“This is truly an innovative idea from Vinnies and one we are thrilled to be part of,” says Jake.
“A substantial waste product is being repurposed, we still receive our rebate, as well as knowing that proceeds from the recycled oil are going to support Vinnies’ vital programs, it’s a win-win-win.”
One of the benefits of signing up with VUCOR is that the scheme helps to fund the work of St Vincent de Paul Society NSW.
Scanline/Cleanaway have committed to contribute an additional charitable rebate to Vinnies for every litre of oil that is collected through the program. This charitable rebate comes out of Scanline/Cleanaway’s own operating profits and does not affect the cash rebates that will still be paid to venues for their used cooking oil.
Club Five Dock RSL CEO David Conway recently signed up to the scheme and says that their Club saw tremendous value in the initiative and it didn’t add any extra expense.
“As a Club, we constantly seek opportunities to contribute to our local community, making the decision to participate straightforward,” he says.
“Following internal discussions, it was unanimously agreed to also donate the Club's own rebate to Vinnies through this program, enhancing their efforts even further.”
Scanline was chosen as the business partner for the VUCOR scheme as they are one of the leading oil collection companies in Australia.
Operating out of a purpose-built facility in Riverstone, in Sydney’s northwest, they run an extensive fleet of specialist vehicles covering most of NSW. They have a processing capacity of around 25,000 metric tonnes per year and a total storage capacity of 1.3 million litres.
Their stellar reputation for efficiency in kitchen operations has seen them service major restaurant groups, leisure venues and independents since 1969.
Scanline/Cleanaway will supply top quality tanks and equipment free of charge to any venues signing up through VUCOR and can tailor a collection schedule that meets the custom needs of each kitchen.
Scanline National Development Manager Ryan Knights says while they were initially surprised by a call from Vinnies, once they understood what Vinnies wanted to achieve and how a scheme could work, they were delighted to become the operational partner.
“Vinnies are able to bring us new customers motivated by their desire to support Vinnies’ work in the community,” says Ryan.
“We are happy to work with such a proactive and innovative organisation. It really is a positive scheme for everyone; the venue, us, the environment and most of all the people whose Vinnies’ work helps.”
Using Scanline, an Australian owned and operated company with EPA accreditation, ensures that the oil collected through the VUCOR scheme will be recycled locally in NSW, making it more environmentally friendly than exporting the oil overseas as per some other oil recycling programs.
None of the used cooking oil goes to waste, all of the oil collected by Scanline is processed, recycled and sent for further manufacturing to be turned into renewable fuel and animal stock feed in NSW.
Funds raised through the VUCOR charitable rebate will be reinvested into the community through a range of programs and services run by St Vincent de Paul Society NSW.
While probably best known for their homeless shelters and food vans, Vinnies operates a vast range of services aimed at providing a helping-hand-up approach to members of our communities who are struggling. Unfortunately, like many other charities, Vinnies are seeing a significant increase in families turning to them for help with everyday needs. By making the switch to VUCOR, you can help support their vital work in the community.
This is a great opportunity to drive positive social impact and reduce your environmental footprint at no cost or loss of service levels to your venue. The VUCOR scheme is quickly growing and is hopefully set to become a major player in used cooking oil recycling services within NSW. Vinnies would be thrilled to have your club on board.
