Your Feedback is Key
With a packed reform agenda in the State and Federal Governments, our Policy and Government team is working on a modified approach to how we consult members to inform our policy positions.
Given the importance of some potential forthcoming reforms, it is essential we get sufficient buy-in from clubs to ensure we represent our members and put forward the industry’s best case.
Our industry consultation will include a mix of formal and informal measures. For instance, we have recently started seeking member feedback via eCircular on our submissions. You may have noticed these requests for feedback on proposed reforms to the AML/CTF Act, the inquiry into Australia’s disaster resilience, and mandatory country of origin labelling for seafood in hospitality venues.
Our team will also use ClubsNSW regional meetings as an opportunity to notify clubs about upcoming consultations and invite them to give us feedback on our position or submit case studies to support our advocacy.
We will also continue to engage with clubs informally, as we have done for some time. For instance, to support our position on workforce shortages, we engaged with clubs in regions more reliant on skilled visa holders and working holidaymakers. We will be appearing before a parliamentary inquiry into the migration system shortly, and these case studies will no doubt come in handy.
Of course, we will revise our industry consultation methods as necessary.
A number of other reviews are coming up. These include proposals to remove the small business and employee records exemptions in the Privacy Act, to redefine casual employment and to criminalise wage underpayments.
The Government is also about to commence targeted consultation on new laws governing how businesses use facial recognition. ClubsNSW has engaged closely with the Attorney-General’s Office and Department on reforms to facial recognition regulation, as well as community stakeholders.
Most importantly, soon we can expect to see the new Government carry out its gaming reform agenda — a process which will no doubt involve heavy industry consultation.
Other reform processes are part of the way through or about to wrap up. These include multiple reviews on workforce and migration policy.
Unfortunately, we cannot always get industry feedback, particularly for targeted consultations, which tend to be confidential. Most of the workplace relations consultations of late have been private, and federal tax consultations are frequently highly targeted and confidential.
Lastly, to give our members better oversight of our advocacy, we will shortly begin publishing all public policy submissions on the ClubsNSW website. Stay tuned.
