Is Your Club Prepared to Save a Life?
By taking less than five minutes to tell us whether your facility has an AED and where it’s located, your club/organisation can play a critical role in protecting your community.
Key Points
- The project aims to strengthen emergency response and make sport safer by:
- Mapping AEDs statewide and integrating data with the official NSW Ambulance/GoodSAM registry
- Identifying gaps to guide future investment through the Local Sport Defibrillator Grant Program
- Expanding #HeartHealthMatters to deliver free AED and CPR training, particularly across regional NSW
Every year, sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) claims thousands of lives in Australia. According to the Heart Foundation, around 20,000 Australians suffer a cardiac arrest outside of hospital each year, and tragically, only about 10 per cent survive. The difference between life and death often comes down to one thing: Time. Immediate access to an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and CPR can increase survival rates by up to 70 per cent when used within the first few minutes.
That’s why the NSW AED Mapping Project—a partnership between Heartbeat of Sport and the NSW Office of Sport—is so important. Our goal is to map every AED across sporting clubs and community venues statewide and integrate this data into the official NSW Ambulance GoodSAM registry. This ensures that first responders and bystanders can locate the nearest AED in real time during an emergency.
Why Does This Matter for Your Club and Community?
Faster Emergency Response: When every AED is mapped and accessible, lives are saved.
Identify Gaps: Mapping highlights areas without AED coverage and assists with investment where it’s needed.
Community Safety: Your participation helps create a safer sporting environment for players, staff, and spectators and the wider community.
Clubs that contribute will be acknowledged as Heart-Safe Organisations and gain access to AED familiarisation and CPR training through our #HeartHealthMatters program.
Research also shows that defibrillators save lives. In fact, the Australian Resuscitation Council reports that early defibrillation can more than double survival rates and by mapping AEDs statewide, we’re building a network that ensures help is never too far away.
