Commonwealth Parliament Returns with New Cabinet and Strong Labor Majority
When the bells rang in Canberra on 22 July, the 48th Parliament officially opened with the ceremonial State Opening by the Governor-General, marking the start of what is shaping up to be an interesting term in Australian politics.
Following the recent federal election, the Albanese Labor Government returned with the largest majority for a Labor government since WWII. With strong numbers in the House of Representatives, the Government is expected to move forward with its key priorities over the coming term.
This new term also brings a changing of the guard. Former Liberal leader Peter Dutton will not return to Parliament after losing his seat, with the Coalition experiencing its biggest vote setback since it was founded in 1944.
In the Senate, Labor now holds 29 of the 76 seats. The Government will require support from either the Greens or the Coalition to pass legislation, meaning cross-party cooperation will be key to any success in reform this term.
There are several key changes to Cabinet that matter to our sector:
- Michelle Rowland MP has been appointed Attorney-General, becoming the Government’s chief law officer following her previous role as Minister for Communications. That role has now been filled by Anika Wells MP, who also continues as Minister for Sport.
- Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke MP will now also be responsible for Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing.
- Amanda Rishworth MP is now the Minister responsible for Employment and Workplace Relations.
Both Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and new Opposition Leader Sussan Ley held their election night events at registered clubs. Their choice of venue was a welcome recognition on an important night for the nation of the significant role clubs play in communities across the state.
As they do regularly, every term, our Government Affairs team will be in Canberra to advocate for the club industry and highlight the important contributions clubs make to communities.
