A New Era at Young Services Club
Seven months into his tenure as CEO, Lewis Butterworth is ushering in a new era of growth and planning at Young Services Club.
With major strategic projects now underway and long-term investment decisions taking shape, Lewis has quickly moved from settling into the role to steering the Club through one of its most forward-focused periods in recent years.
With a background spanning both metropolitan and regional hospitality, Lewis is bringing fresh perspective, a long-term strategic mindset and a clear commitment to supporting the community the Club serves.
When Lewis joined Young Services Club, he arrived with extensive experience across the club industry, including roles at Condobolin Golf Club, Club York and North Bondi RSL.
Originally from Manchester, Lewis made the move from Sydney to regional NSW following the pandemic.
“I felt really claustrophobic in Sydney during COVID — just packed trains, masks, crowds everywhere. I applied for a few regional club roles and the response was amazing,” Lewis says.
From there, the path led him to Young, where he quickly embraced both the community and the opportunity to drive the Club forward.
Despite being early in his tenure, Lewis says that more has changed in the first six months than he expected.
His focus has centred on capital expenditure, strengthening the Club’s long-term business plan and preparing for future growth. One of the most significant projects currently in motion is the expansion of the Club’s motel offering.
“We’re in the very early planning stages, but we've begun working with construction consultants and are preparing to take a business case to the Board. There’s huge demand for accommodation in the region and we want to be ready to meet it,” Lewis says.
That growing demand is being driven by a regional population boom. Young and surrounding towns are experiencing significant housing shortages, as hundreds of new homes are being built and rental availability remains scarce throughout the year.
This shift has placed even greater importance on strategic planning for visitor accommodation and future Club amenities.
Lewis’ leadership has also been strengthened by a smooth transition from former CEO Dean Cafe, who’s made the move north of the border to enjoy retirement.
“Dean built a strong foundation here. It’s been great to come in and build on that, and the team has been fantastic,” he says.
While some longer-term projects remain confidential, Lewis confirms that the Club is planning ahead with ambition, community benefit and sustainability in mind.
