In a League of Her Own
It is rare these days to have a sportsperson positively acknowledged in Parliament for their achievements in the community, but for Central Coast local Sarah Dimech this has happened on two separate occasions as the Hansard records of NSW Parliament can bear testament.
Sarah has been rightfully applauded by local MP David Harris for the pivotal role she plays in the development and advancement of women’s rugby league within the Central Coast community.
Currently employed by the Wyong Leagues Group in the dual role of Group Compliance Officer and Rugby League Development Officer, when she isn’t ensuring that the Group meets its obligations with regulations, Sarah is tirelessly conducting coaching clinics at the many schools within the region.
If that wasn’t enough to keep her busy, Sarah is also the Captain of the Wyong Roos women’s side.
As a current player, Sarah’s record is very impressive. Not only was she recognised as Female Player of the Year last season, she has a long list of high representative achievements including at the Central Coast Roosters, NSW Country, and the national women’s side of Malta.
Despite her achievements to date, she is determined that the best is yet to come, as she works hard to get a shot to play in the NRLW.
“I want to achieve as much as I possibly can in the game, and playing at the highest level is the goal, so the next step for me would be to play in the NRLW,” says Sarah.
“I have been really fortunate to be able to find myself in a role where I can develop my professional career path and pursue my sporting ambitions all at the same time thanks to the Wyong Leagues Group.”
Wyong Roos has had women’s rugby league as a core part of its growth strategy for several years and has achieved solid growth because of this focus. Currently, there are 70 girls participating in the junior ranks where they field sides in the 13, 15, 17 and open divisions. The Roos are the only Club to be able to do so in the region.
“Sarah is an outstanding ambassador for our organisation whether in the office or out on the field, she approaches her roles with the same level of passion and commitment,” says CEO of the Wyong Leagues Group Ben Coghlan.
