How Clubs Can Support the Far West Region Recovery Project
A process is now in place to support the communities impacted by ongoing power outages in Far West NSW, which the NSW Premier declared a natural disaster last week.
Residents in Broken Hill, Menindee, Tibooburra, White Cliffs, Wilcannia and surrounding areas are still trying to recover after a sudden storm on 17 October brought down seven transmission towers. Replacement transmission towers are not expected to be in place until 6 November at the earliest, with a backup generator — which itself has experienced ‘trip-ups’ — currently servicing impacted communities.
With the situation in the region beginning to stabilise, the focus has now shifted to supporting those workers who have been stood down without pay and with no access to Centrelink payments, and low-income households who are struggling to replace perishable goods and other items. The impact on the mental health of those in the community is of particular concern.
Teams at both the St Vincent de Paul Society and Lifeline are assisting communities in the region. Clubs who would like to contribute to the recovery efforts are encouraged to reach out to the contacts below.

Clubs who contact these services will be issued with a ‘Supporter ID’ which will ensure any donations made reach the Far West Recovery Fund.
Recovery Assistance Points will be made available to impacted communities in order for them to access mental health services, community groups and government representatives.
