Hollywood Hits Corowa Golf Club
Last Friday Corowa Golf Club experienced a touch of Hollywood in their Federation Cinema with a screening of John Jarratt’s 2024 film What About Sal? It was followed by a Q&A with the star.
The 58-seat cinema at the Club was a sell out for the 6:30pm session of the movie which John wrote, directed and starred in, with locals champing at the bit to interact with the star afterwards.
Corowa Golf Club Operations Manager Carly Detlefsen said there were plenty more people who attended on the night wanting to join the Q&A, but missed out on tickets.
“Everybody was interested in coming out and meeting him, obviously everybody knows him from Wolf Creek,” Carly said.
"They were excited to come out and have their chance at meeting somebody famous.”
With John currently on a tour of the country promoting the movie, he was the one to contact the Club cinema and ask if they were interested in being the last stop on the Riverina leg — an opportunity they jumped at and are now hungry for similar events.
“This is the first one that we've had but it has just proved that it is valuable for the Club,” Carly said.
“It brought out people, brought out locals, brought out visitors — there was a lot of interest.”
As for the flow on effect to the rest of the Club, Carly said the clubhouse was full, with most cinema goers having dinner and a drink before heading to the screening, resulting in a boost in bar sales for the night — not to mention those who hung back afterwards - including John himself who enjoyed a drink and mingling in the Club for half an hour.
“Would be great if we could have another kind of Q&A with another director or writer, but I don't know if that will happen,” Carly said.
“We are looking at something like a ladies’ night monthly or a movie night with an older type of movie so that everybody will come watch – it's about the atmosphere that it brings to the Club.”
As for which star could be next to hit the Riverina Club, Carly agreed that perhaps Margot Robbie or Chris Hemsworth would be handy.
“Wouldn't that be great? That'd definitely be fantastic – that would bring a lot of different people,” Carly joked.
