Football Frenzy Goes From Wests Ashfield to East Africa
Since its launch in June 2024, an initiative by the Holman Barnes Group has united communities with the common objective of supporting underprivileged children in Africa.
The Happy Feet Project hit a significant milestone on Tuesday, 19 November, with the first shipment of donations beginning its journey to Tanzania in eastern Africa.
The program began with a vision to supply ‘gently used’ soccer equipment to children who pursue their passion for the sport despite facing difficult circumstances. With the tremendous support of the local community, this aspiration is coming to fruition.
Local sports clubs and supporters helped fill more than 85 boxes filled with soccer shoes, jerseys, shorts, socks and additional items.
Donations were gathered at Wests Ashfield and Lambert Park, with further contributions anticipated from the Wests Tigers training facility, Zurich Centre
The shipment is projected to arrive in Tanzania by January 2025, where it will be distributed to children through collaborations with grassroots organisations and local community leaders. These donations will not only safeguard children from injuries but also empower them to engage in soccer with confidence and joy.
"At Holman Barnes Group, our purpose is deeply rooted in supporting our community, members, staff, and grassroots sports,” said HBG CEO Simon Cook.
“The Happy Feet Project embodies these commitments while aligning with one of our core value of sustainability.
“By giving pre-loved soccer gear a second life, we’re reducing waste and creating a meaningful impact that extends far beyond our borders.
“This initiative is a testament to the power of coming together to make a difference globally."
If you or your local sporting club have soccer shoes and jerseys, you can drop them off at Wests Ashfield, Lambert Park or the Wests Tigers Zurich Centre.
