The Department of Industry, Science and Resources has launched a new guide to help Australian organisations adopt artificial intelligence (AI) responsibly.
Released in October 2025, the Guidance for AI Adoption sets out six essential practices for responsible AI governance. Developed by the National Artificial Intelligence Centre, the guidance is designed to help businesses of all sizes navigate the complex space of AI with confidence.
The guidance comes in two tailored versions: Foundations, for organisations just starting out, and Implementation Practices, for those with more mature governance structures or operating in high-risk environments. Both versions align with Australia’s AI Ethics Principles and international standards, ensuring consistency and credibility across the board.
The six practices include:
Decide who is accountable – Establish clear roles and responsibilities across the organisation.
Understand impacts and plan accordingly – Consider how AI affects people, communities and business operations.
Measure and manage risks – Implement AI-specific risk management strategies.
Share essential information – Ensure transparency and explainability in AI systems.
Test and monitor – Evaluate AI systems for reliability and safety.
Maintain human control – Keep meaningful human oversight in place.
The guidance also encourages organisations to adopt a human-centred approach, prioritising fairness, inclusion and the protection of individual rights.
With AI increasingly shaping the future of work, services and innovation, this guidance offers a trusted resource for Australian organisations ready to take embark on their AI journey.
