Club Patronage Swells as Golf Championship Begins
Moruya Golf Club and Club Catalina are gearing up for one of their busiest periods in recent memory as they jointly host the NSW Junior Championship.
This four-day event will this week bring together over 200 of NSW’s most promising junior golfers, along with their families, coaches and supporters, creating a wave of activity across the Eurobodalla region.
Catalina Club Marketing Manager, Gill Kingston, says the tournament was already generating significant interest, and the Club was preparing for large crowds.
"The whole field is coming, around 220 players, plus all the families who travel with them," Gill says.
"Because it's a junior tournament, it’s always very, very busy. We see big numbers, not just on the course but throughout our Club facilities.
"Usually for these weekends, we're incredibly busy because we're the biggest Club in the area. We have cafes, restaurants, sports bars, main bars and a children’s play area, so we attract a family audience.
“People come in not just for the golf but for everything else we offer."
Meanwhile, at Moruya Golf Club, General Manager Blair St Anne says the event was already translating into strong advance bookings and local economic activity.
"We’re expecting 125 kids each day, plus their parents and spectators," Blair says.
"It’s going to be quite a busy time for the Club, not just on the course but also in our clubhouse and dining areas."
The championship format will see players complete two qualifying rounds — one at each course —before a cut determines the final field of competitors.
"They’ll play one round at each venue, then there’ll be a cut to decide who goes through to the final rounds and determines the placings," Blair says.
The event underscores the strength of the South Coast’s junior golf development and Gill says it’s great recognition for the Club’s commitment to the sport.
“Catalina’s junior program is one of the largest in the Far South Coast region, and its Director of Golf was recognised as the PGA Club Professional of the Year in 2024 for his work supporting grassroots sport,” she says.
"It's great for us to be able to host the championship and even though we’re in winter, it’s still a beautiful time for people to come down to the South Coast and experience our warm hospitality and fantastic facilities."
With the tournament set to return in 2026, both clubs see the event as an important part of their community engagement and business growth.
"It’s a fantastic opportunity for the Club and for local tourism," Blair says.
"We’re proud to be part of something that brings people together and showcases our region."
