The John Edmondson V.C. Memorial Club (Club Liverpool) has been serving the community in Sydney’s southwest since 1947, and has recently undergone a major transformation to increase its street appeal.
Located in the heart of the Liverpool CBD, it is well loved by members, local business groups and schools, offering a popular restaurant, café, meeting and entertainment spaces.
For many years, there have been discussions around updating parts of the Club to modernise the look and feel, and offer a more comfortable and inviting venue for members and guests to enjoy.
After refreshing the 2170 Restaurant and 2170 Bar in recent years, it was time to spruce up the main foyer.
Initial design plans centred around improving the flow of the space for people entering the Club, and updating the look and feel to give that ‘wow’ factor as visitors first walk in.
Club Liverpool CEO Peter Suggett says the previous design was weathered and overlooked.
“The Club’s foyer hadn’t been updated since 1992 and it wasn’t serving our staff or members very effectively,” he says.
“The layout was clunky, and the style was outdated and drab, and it did nothing to promote the fantastic venue we have.
“We also had very little signage out on the street, so it was difficult to spot us if you didn’t already know we were here”.
The Club engaged Sarah Remaili House of Design and PMDL Architects to redesign the space, and Plancon Projects P/L to carry out the building works, and in early 2025, construction began.
The main features of the redesign included a new façade on the outside of the Club from street level to the roof, with a sleek new style, improved signage and lighting.
Inside the foyer area, the reception desk was relocated to a more favourable position to welcome members and guests as they entered, and the desk itself was redesigned with a sleek modern look and feel. The foyer area now has plenty of space and looks open and inviting.
“We are really happy with the finished product, and we believe the new space will serve our patrons for many years to come,” says Peter.
“The feedback from our members and guests has been overwhelmingly positive, and they love the foyer's opulence and the standout aesthetic of the Club’s exterior.
“We couldn’t be happier!”
