Chatswood RSL Hits a Home Run
Chatswood RSL is hoping to attract a younger demographic through its doors after the launch of Yogi’s Sports Bar — a modern take on a classic American sports bar.
In what’s already been described as Sydney’s premier sports destination in The Daily Telegraph, the cutting-edge 300-capacity bar officially launched last Thursday.
The venue features two large LED screens and 25 additional smaller screens throughout the two-level precinct, with a mix of bar seating, high tables and six bookable private booths — each with their own screen.
For those who fancy physically participating in between watching, a dedicated arcade game area features football tables and electronic darts.
Along with offering all the popular Australian sports, Yogi’s will also feature dedicated screens with American codes including NFL, NBA and Major League Baseball.
“I’m very happy to be able to say that this is what Sydney wants and needs… and this will be a great space for generations to come, I have no doubt,” Chatswood RSL President Craig Murray told the gathered crowd on the launch night, which included dignitaries such as Willoughby MP Tim Charles.
Yogi’s concept was devised by Tully Heard Consulting, who have delivered other cutting-edge offerings inside clubs, such as The Fernery at Mosman Club and The Greens at North Sydney.
“Yogi’s Sports Bar is set to bring an energetic and exciting atmosphere to the North Shore hospitality scene,” said Tully Heard Consulting Director John Tully.
“Tapping into the global trend of younger markets seeking more experience-based outings, Yogi’s offers the perfect blend of great food, drinks and immersive sports entertainment — creating a vibrant destination where fans can fully engage in the excitement of live sports.”
The bar is named after the late Chatswood RSL President Garry Owen, who served on the Board for more than 25 years.
“This is a space that truly honours Yogi, and I wouldn’t be standing here if it wasn’t for Yogi, I’m feeling especially proud tonight to be here opening this bar,” said Craig.
“For all of those who knew him, Yogi was so much more than the former President of Chatswood RSL Club, he was a mate, he was a mentor and someone whose presence could light up any and every room.
“It’s fitting that we gather here tonight to celebrate not just Yogi’s memory but the community he helped to build. He would be so pleased that so many of his friends are here sharing the laughter and the space that now carries his name.”
Yogi’s wife Marlene and son Damien were in attendance to help officially open Yogi’s, along with extended family — some of whom had travelled from as far as Narromine to be there.
“I got a bit teary when Craig started making the speech and just before Mum cut the ribbon,” Damien told ClubLIFE.com.au.
“I miss my father, and I wish he was still here to see it, it would’ve made his day, he’d be in tears.”
Just a stone’s throw from Chatswood train station, Yogi’s is a short 12-minute trip on the metro from Barangaroo, ensuring that it becomes not just the hottest destination for locals, but Sydneysiders alike.
