Central Coast Clubs Hosting Free Technology Classes for Seniors
For Central Coast residents whose years have TikTok’d past them at a speed that has seen them fall behind in understanding today’s technology, local clubs are coming to the rescue.
Ettalong Diggers and Central Coast Leagues Club are hosting a series of free technology workshops for those over the age of 50 — and they have been a huge hit with locals so far.
The sessions aim to educate attendees on the basics — from browsing the internet to modern digital devices, including smartphones, tablets and laptops.
The workshops are booming at Ettalong Diggers and Central Coast Leagues Club thanks to the Mangrove Mountain Computer Club and support from the Good Things Foundation and Be Connected, which is an Australian Government initiative.
“Originally, it was only once a month, and that was so popular. That's why this year we've now started it twice a month,” says Ettalong Diggers Community and Tourism Officer Kim Cole.
“We're getting amazing numbers. We're pretty much getting 70 to 80 participants each session and they love it.”
The teaching starts at the very basic levels, followed by specific issues that individual students would like to receive help with.
“The first half of the session they'll talk about a different subject each time, so it might be passwords or how to use Google properly,” Kim says.
“The second half they have mentors and they break up and go into different smaller groups where you can focus more on individual needs. They're learning something new each time they come in.”
Federal Member for Robertson, Dr Gordon Reid MP, said it’s important for local seniors to be able to keep up with technology trends.
“The Federal Labor Government understands that technology is increasingly becoming more and more integral in our everyday lives,” Dr Reid said.
“It is imperative then that everyone in our community feels confident to use technology and get the most out of it.
“I encourage our community to take advantage of the opportunities available and get along to one of the many workshops available across the region.”
The free technology classes take place on:
- Every second and fourth Tuesday of each month at Ettalong Diggers from 10am.
- The first and third Thursdays of each month at Central Coast Leagues Club from 10:30am.
